Sierra Nevada: Biosphere Reserve
National and Natural park.
One of the best places to reflect the ongoing relationship between Africa and Europe is in the Sierra Nevada. Here were concentrated the most powerful orogenic thrusts of both plates, which raised over the Mediterranean one of the most unique mountain on Earth. Crossroads prodigiosa, albera biological traces found in different latitudes is this "climate island" a place where evolved independently.
Majestic Sierra Nevada is located between the fertile plain of Granada and Almeria desert foothills, between the arid highlands of Zenete and orchards Alpujarreños noon. From the foothills to its snowy peaks is represented throughout the Mediterranean vegetation ranging from subtropical crops to the desert where high botanical endemics are common.
Different peoples have occupied over the centuries valleys exploiting the mineral and agricultural wealth, but none like the Arabs have left many traces. Not for nothing remained for eight centuries in this land, making the slope of the mountain slopes into fertile crop terracing with an ingenious system of irrigation ditches through. Their homes and traditional activities are still in force, and the most international of the Sierra Nevada is decorated with the wonderful Alhambra.
The nineteenth-century romantic travelers found in the Sierra Nevada exoticism and adventure, discovery and fascination for this unique blend of the high peaks of perpetual snow next to a nearby shoreline, there are habits in a remote and untamed land isolation.
The geodiversity and biodiversity that houses Sierra Nevada, along with the spectacular landscape are cultural reasons for giving this mountain the best awards that may have a protected natural area: Biosphere Reserve (1986), Natural Park (1989), National Park (1999), Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA, 2002), European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (2004) Ramsar Area -Padul Wetlands- (2006).
